Galle

Located on the picturesque southwest coast of Sri Lanka, 113 kilometres from the capital city Colombo, sits the historic city of Galle. Built by the Dutch back in 1663 and now an UNESCO World Heritage site, Galle’s core is the Fort, a walled enclave surrounded by the Indian Ocean on three sides. Galle Fort (‘Ramparts of Galle’ or Dutch Fort as it is also Known), is well  maintained by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka who continue to protect the monuments historical, archaeological and architectural heritage.

With its charming narrow cobbled streets blessed with welcoming cafes and quirky boutiques, the city of Galle is an absolute delight to explore on foot. Things to see and do in Galle are so numerous and diverse, you’ll be spoilt for choice – these include visits to an exotic old trading port, several Dutch-colonial buildings, ancient mosques and churches, Galle Lighthouse, Galle Clock Tower, the Old Dutch Hospital and the National Museum, all in addition to simply strolling along the Fort walls.

The markets are popular places to visit too, including the 300-year-old Dutch Market which is crammed with the freshest local produce as well as lovely trinkets and traditional Sri Lankan souvenirs for you to take home. Other activities include Sri Lankan cooking lessons, Kolam mask calving, rice paddy bike tours, a visit to a turtle hatchery, trying out traditional stilt fishing and of course time spent on the idyllic alm-fringed beaches either relaxing, swimming or enjoying various other water sports.
