Weave through a tropical jungle to find one of the most secluded beaches in the southern coast. Located between the main city of Galle and Rumassala, as the name suggests, this idyllic, golden sandy beach is surrounded by a tropical jungle and reached only following a climb up Rumassala Hill and a small trek down the path through the greenery. The walk takes approx. 30 minutes and as such, Jungle Beach is not overpopulated by tourists and retains its pristine natural charm.

Rich in biodiversity, Rumassala Hill is blessed with an array of rare birds, flowers, butterflies, monkeys, monitor lizards and other wildlife as well rare medicinal plants, much of which you will see during your walk. According to Ramayana legend, the Rumassala Rock is part of the Himalayan range that was brought by “Hanuman” to heal the wounded battalions in order to obey the request of King Rama.

Protected by the bay, the calm turquoise water of the Indian Ocean offers safe swimming without waves and provide perfect conditions to snorkel the coral reefs and explore the exotic marine life just a few metres offshore. Apart from schools of colourful fish, you may spot tiger fish, moray eels, crabs, barracudas and much more – be sure to take your snorkel and mask! A visit to the Rumassala Sanctuary is a must for wildlife enthusiasts wanting to learn more about the exotic flora and fauna, including rare plants, medicinal herbs and endemic species of birds. Other activities from Jungle Beach include whale watching, boat trips, scuba diving,jungle hiking and visiting nearby historical ruins.
