Negombo is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist resorts. Known for its long sandy, palm-lined beaches, safe sea, big hotels and centuries old fishing industry, Negombo is a city located on the west coast of Sri Lanka just north of and close to the capital, Colombo.

The local community in Negombo are extremely friendly and welcoming. With a large range of hotels and restaurants to suit all budgets, and array of activities, there is something here for everyone.

The colonial-built Dutch canal flows in the heart of the city creating a scenic lagoon amid lush grove coconut palms in which over 190 species of wildlife and birds thrive in its mangroves, perfect for sightseeing and boat tours. Whilst the northern border of the city is formed by the Ma Oya river which meets the Indian Ocean.

Fisherman live in shanty thatch palm villages which line the water’s edge of the lagoon. Using outrigger canoes calved out of tree trunks and man powered catamarans, they use their traditional knowledge and nylon nets to bring in modest catches between September and April. When they return after their fishing trip, auctions on the beach and sales at the fish market near the ford are definitely worth watching.

Close to the seafront near the lagoon mouth are the ruins of the old Dutch fort which has a fine gateway inscribed with the date 1678. Now a prison, the building is only admired from the outside (except of course for those who commit serious crimes) but the Esplanade in which it sits often hosts a cricket match which provides a big attraction.

In the bustling town centre, you will find the fading pink chamber of St Mary’s Church (Negombo’s largest cathedral) which has some thunderous religious paintings covering the nave. Just east of the town centre the Angurukaramulla Temple is also worth a visit to see dragon entrance and the 6m-long reclining Buddha, ornate sculptures, murals and the ruins of a historic library.

Negombo has far more to offer its visitors than just its idyllic wide sandy beach!
